DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACOGNOSY

The Department of Pharmacognosy specializes in the study of medicinal plants and natural products, focusing on their identification, extraction, and therapeutic applications. It integrates traditional knowledge with modern scientific techniques to develop herbal medicines and bioactive compounds, contributing to natural drug discovery and development.

The department involves in various research activities like

  • Authentication of medicinal plants.
  • Standardization of herbal drugs.
  • Isolation and evaluation of therapeutically important phytoconstituents.
  • Histochemical studies, isolation, formulation, and evaluation of volatile components.
  • Characterization of such isolated compounds.

Received various grants from

  • All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi under Research and Development Programme.
  • Tamil Nadu Pharmaceutical Sciences Welfare Trust (TNPSWT), Chennai.
  • Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology (TNSCST), Chennai.
  • Organized many State level Workshops and Staff Development Programme (SDP) sponsored by the AICTE, New Delhi.

The department maintains

  • Herbal conservation area (1 acre) having 150 species of medicinal plants
  • Herbal museum with a display of crude drugs, herbarium & photographs of rare medicinal plants to promote herbal research
